Two Ewes and a lamb

Bighorn Sheep Count 2012Anza Borrego Desert State ParkRattlesnake Spring

  • Untitled video
  • Milling around the water hole still not sure it is safe to drink or not
  • Looks like 2 Ewes bashing horns over something
  • This is the water dance that can go on for hours. The water hole is nestled in some brush and trees and the sheep don't seem to like that as it is where the cougars will hide and ambush them. So the sheep basically will inch closer and closer to the water hole and then run away until they feel it is safe. They will do this for hours before finally getting a drink. You can identify sheep that need water by the large indentation in the rear of their body above the hind legs.
  • Finally after several hours they go down for a drink. What you can't see in the video is the thousands of bees that are swarming the water hole. The water is covered with bees that have drowned and are now dead in the water.

  • Many of the sheep will rest in the shade for many hours after drinking water
  • Heading down towards the water hole
  • Down at the water hole

  • Panorama of our count site, the water hole where the sheep will get water from is in the far left in the green shrubs and our count site is the small tarp on a small finger of a ridge on the far right
